Summer Storage Tips

When storing your items in a hot environment, it's crucial to shield them from sun damage. Exposure to heat and UV rays can lead to rapid deterioration, causing materials like metal and wood to warp and leather components to crack, fade, or warp. In extreme cases, prolonged sun exposure can even result in items melting. To ensure the longevity of your belongings, it's best to keep them covered and protected from direct sunlight.

If you're currently without indoor storage, it may be worth considering investing in a unit. Doing so will provide protection from the sun's damaging rays and shield your belongings from rain, snow, hail, and wind.

Liquids
Storing liquids in a storage unit is a bad idea, especially when it comes to flammable ones like kerosene and gasoline, or those that give off strong odors or fumes. Even water can cause issues when stored for a long time. During the summer, water can evaporate and create humidity in the surrounding area leading to mold and mildew growth.

Electronics and Appliances
When it comes to electronics and appliances, it's important to remove the batteries before storing them. Additionally, keep refrigerator doors slightly open and avoid storing any food in the unit. Fluctuations from cool to hot can damage plastic, making it brittle over time. Humidity can also harm electronics, it's crucial to keep them away from moisture.

Fine Art
Fine art, in particular, is highly sensitive to temperature changes. Hot temperatures can cause inks to fade or melt, leading to thermal tensions, moisture reduction, and chemical reactions. Conversely, cool temperatures can solidify the ink and make the canvas brittle.

Delicate Clothing
For delicate clothing items like lace and leather, it's important to store them in a ventilated area when storing long term because fluctuating temperatures can damage these materials.

Musical Instruments
Musical instruments are also affected by temperature changes which can alter their tone. For instance, violins and guitars will sound different in warmer temperatures compared to cooler ones. It's best to avoid storing instruments in warmer temperatures to ensure their longevity.
